Everyone knows the snow has been piling up. At the MD, we appreciate everyone working hard to keep their driveways and sidewalks clear!

However, our road crews are noticing an increase in snow being pushed onto public roads and into ditches. We need to pause and remind everyone why this is a safety issue.

To keep our roads safe for families, emergency vehicles, and snowplow operators, we’re asking for your cooperation in following the MD’s community snowplow guidelines.

Important Snow Removal Reminder

Under Bylaw 2023-03, help keep our communities safe by piling snow only on your own property—never on roads or in ditches—and by clearing sidewalks bordering your property within 72 hours after snowfall.

Why Does it Matter?

Road Safety: Snow pushed onto the road freezes into dangerous ice ridges. These ridges create driving hazards and can damage our plow equipment, increasing the risks for accidents.

Flooding Risks: Snow piled in ditches can block culverts. When it melts, the water has nowhere to go—leading to flooded basements, driveways, and roads.

Two Simple Rules to Follow

To keep everyone safe this winter, please follow two simple rules:

  1. Keep it on Your Property: Pile snow on your own property, not across the road or in the ditch.
  2. Clear the Way: If you have a sidewalk, please clear it within 72 hours of a snowfall.

Our goal is education, not penalties. However, pushing snow onto the road or neighbouring property is a bylaw infraction that can result in fines of up to $5,000, plus billable clean-up costs.

Let’s keep our roads safe, our drainage systems working, and our money in our pockets—not spent on fines.

Thank you for being a responsible neighbour, and stay warm!
