Road bans preserve the lifespan of our roadways—improving motorist safety and reducing long-term repair costs.

Bans are implemented periodically during construction and maintenance, and annually during the spring thaw when frost movement makes roads especially vulnerable to damage.

Current road bans are always posted on the MD website in the Road Bans section ( mdsr.ca/road-bans ) a minimum of two days in advance, except in emergency situations. Each new order supersedes all previous bans.

Road Ban Enforcement

Important: Bylaw enforcement personnel conduct spot checks throughout the MD to ensure compliance with road bans. For more information, refer to the Municipal Bylaws section.

To request a road ban permit, contact the MD at 1.866.449.4888. Note that special approvals, such as for heavy hauls or travel on banned roads require a minimum of three business days for processing and approval.

Note: Passenger and recreational vehicles are exempt from road bans in the MD.
