Community Peace Officers vs. RCMP Officers: What’s the Difference?
Serving and safeguarding our communities
The MD’s peace officers work in close collaboration with RCMP officers and other agencies to address complex issues and promote effective law enforcement.
While both play vital roles in enforcing legislation, their responsibilities differ.
RCMP officers investigate and enforce federal, provincial, and municipal laws, including Criminal Code offenses, across both urban and rural communities, whereas peace officers focus on enforcing municipal bylaws and provincial laws specifically within the MD, ensuring community standards are upheld.

Clear Guidelines for Open Spaces
Enforcement focuses on the regulations that impact our community most: the Animal Control Bylaw and the Community Standards & Safety Bylaw. These help keep MD parks, trails, and open spaces safe and enjoyable for everyone. For more specifics, visit the Parks section of the website.
Road safety throughout the municipality is maintained through the active enforcement of the provincial Traffic Safety Act.
Safe, Enjoyable, and Inclusive Use of Public Spaces
With 124 public complaints recorded in 2025 alone, the Community Standards & Safety Bylaw remains an essential tool for addressing local concerns and maintaining order within the municipality.
Protecting Infrastructure
If you plan to travel on a restricted roadway, expect to encounter a friendly neighbourhood officer. Last year, the Protective Services team conducted hundreds of patrols on municipal roads, diligently monitoring vehicle weights. The resulting infrastructure cost savings from these proactive patrols are immeasurable; even a single overweight vehicle can render an entire road section unusable.
Traffic Enforcement
In 2025, officers conducted approximately 280 traffic stops and issued 200 violation tickets, with enforcement split between passenger and commercial vehicles. Depending on the time of year, the focus shifts between traffic concerns within hamlets and large-scale operations like log haul and rig moves.
Increased Park and Boat Launch Patrols
This year, peace officers are conducting more frequent patrols at boat launches and campgrounds. While these patrols emphasize friendly engagement—where a visible presence often encourages responsible behaviour—officers will issue tickets for violations such as open liquor or improper waste disposal when necessary.
Improving Rural Patrols
The MD remains committed to proactive community safety with a dedicated two-officer patrol team. By maintaining the expanded capabilities established in recent years, the municipality continues to prioritize late-night and weekend coverage. Efficient file sharing between officers allows for more frequent, high-visibility patrols in every hamlet and rural corner of the MD.
