As online marketplaces grow in popularity, residents are reminded to prioritize personal safety when meeting buyers or sellers in person.

To reduce the risk of theft, fraud, or physical harm, please consider the following "Safe Exchange" guidelines:

  • Location Matters: Never invite strangers to your home or share your address. Meet in a well-lit, busy public area with video surveillance, such as a shopping mall or a designated police "Safe Exchange Zone."
  • The Buddy System: Never go alone. Bring a friend or family member, and ensure someone else knows your location and expected return time.
  • Spot the Red Flags: Be wary of last-minute location changes, requests to move to a secluded spot, or deals that seem too good to be true. If your gut says something is off, cancel the meeting.
  • Do Your Homework: Review the other party’s profile for longevity and positive ratings. Keep a record of their username, phone number, and chat history, as offenders often block victims immediately after a crime.
  • Time it Right: Whenever possible, conduct exchanges during daylight hours when foot traffic is highest.
