As winter brings harsher driving conditions, practicing proper headlight etiquette becomes crucial for ensuring everyone’s safety on the road. Snow, blowing snow, fog, and long winter nights can significantly impair visibility, making it even more important for drivers to understand how to use their vehicle’s headlights effectively.

The RCMP has provided some simple guidelines to help improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents during the winter months. High beams are most effective on dark, rural roads where ambient lighting is scarce. However, they can cause a dangerous glare for oncoming drivers, particularly in snowy or foggy conditions. Be sure to dim high beams at least 150 meters from an approaching vehicle and when closely following another vehicle.

In snowy or foggy weather, high beams can reflect off particles in the air, which actually reduces visibility. In these conditions, it’s best to use low beams to avoid exacerbating the issue. Many vehicles are also equipped with fog lights, which are specifically designed to provide a wider, lower beam that doesn’t reflect as much light back into the driver’s eyes. When visibility is severely reduced, fog lights used in conjunction with low beams are often the safest choice.

Low beams should be used in urban areas, during heavy snowfall, or whenever high beams may cause glare for other drivers. In extreme visibility conditions, such as during blowing snow or whiteouts, turning on your hazard lights in addition to low beams can help alert other drivers to your presence. However, it's important to use hazard lights cautiously, as they may also signal an unexpected stop or slow-moving vehicle.

Hazard lights should not be used if road visibility is still manageable, as they can confuse other drivers. Many modern vehicles are equipped with automatic daytime running lights, which illuminate the front of the vehicle but not the rear. In low-visibility conditions, ensure that both your headlights and taillights are on, so that your vehicle remains visible from all angles.

By following these guidelines, drivers can improve their visibility, reduce the risk of accidents, and contribute to safer winter driving conditions for everyone on the road.
