Guard Against Avian Influenza
Protecting yourself from the Bird Flu.
Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a viral infection that can occasionally spread to humans through contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. Take proactive steps to reduce your risk of exposure.
Exercise Caution Around Birds: If you encounter dead or sick wild birds, do not touch them. Instead, report your findings to Alberta Environment by calling 310-0000.
Stay Safe on Farms: Farmers and workers handling poultry or livestock should wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including masks, gloves, and eye protection, to reduce the risk of exposure to the virus.
Cooking Safeguards: Avian influenza is effectively killed through proper cooking. Make sure poultry, meat, and eggs are thoroughly cooked before eating. Use a food thermometer to confirm that internal temperatures are safe.
Keep Your Pets Safe: Cats and dogs can contract avian influenza by scavenging or consuming raw poultry. To protect them, avoid feeding undercooked meat and ensure they’re kept away from areas with outbreaks.
Travel Safely: If you’re traveling to areas with avian influenza outbreaks, steer clear of live animal markets and follow strict hygiene practices, including regular handwashing and thoroughly cooking your food.
Watch for Symptoms: If you develop flu-like symptoms after coming into contact with birds or wildlife, seek medical advice immediately by calling Health Link at 811. Early testing and treatment are vital.
Mental Health Support: If working with sick or deceased animals is affecting your mental well-being, contact Alberta’s mental health helpline at 1-877-303-2642.
Know Your Premises ID number: If you’re involved in or reporting avian influenza cases, ensure you have your Premises Identification number. This helps track and manage disease outbreaks more effectively, allowing for a quicker response and better support for your farm or operation.
