Wildfire SWF088 near Marten Beach remains classified as out of control. Strong northwest winds are pushing smoke across Highway 88, resulting in reduced speed limits of 60 km/h or full closures for safety.

Helicopters are actively bucketing hotspot areas, while firefighters continue working on the ground to extinguish flare-ups. Heavy equipment crews are also making progress, building guard lines around areas where the fire has spread beyond control lines.

The 2-hour evacuation alert remains in effect. Wildfire SWF088 near Marten Beach remains classified as out of control.

Strong northwest winds, gusting up to 45 km per hour, are pushing smoke across Highway 88, resulting in reduced speed limits of 60 km per hour or full closures for safety.

Helicopters are actively bucketing hotspot areas, while firefighters continue working on the ground to extinguish flare-ups. Heavy equipment crews are also making progress by building guard lines around areas where the fire has spread beyond control lines.

Update #2 as of Monday, June 9 at 5:00pm

The 2-hour evacuation alert remains in effect for the Hamlet of Marten Beach.

Regional Fire Services teams remain stationed in Marten Beach, maintaining structure protection as the wildfire (SWF088) is still classified as out of control. Crews continue with FireSmart efforts around homes and will keep all protective equipment in place until Alberta Forestry and Parks confirms the fire is fully contained.

The fire has shown low activity over the past couple of days. However, it remains active, and there is still a possibility it could breach the fire guard.

Regional Fire Services is in constant communication with Alberta Forestry and Parks—closely monitoring the fire, current and forecasted weather, and sharing updates throughout the day.

As stronger winds and warmer weather are anticipated, the 2-hour evacuation alert remains in effect as a precautionary measure while crews continue to closely monitor the wildfire activity.

Helicopters are bucketing and heavy equipment groups are building containment lines on the south side of the wildfire.

Alberta Wildfire firefighters are patrolling the south perimeter of the wildfire, and Regional Fire crews continue to work on structure protection in Marten Beach.

Wildfire SWF088, located north of Marten Beach, has shown sporadic growth over the past 24 hours; extinguished areas are smouldering due to high winds.

Due to increased prevailing winds and anticipated warmer weather, a 2-hour evacuation alert is now in effect as a precautionary measure while crews closely monitor the wildfire situation.

As of last night, the fire was approximately 24 kilometres north of Marten Beach, remains classified as out of control, and is estimated at 10,488 hectares in size.

Highway 88 is open; however, please check 511 Alberta ( 511.alberta.ca ) for the most current road status. Weather conditions may continue to impact fire behaviour, and crews remain on high alert.

Update as of Sunday, June 1 at 5:30pm

The 4-hour evacuation alert remains in effect, with crews continuing to monitor the situation closely throughout this evening and into tomorrow.

Highway 88 is now open; however, please check 511 Alberta at 511.alberta.ca for the most up-to-date road conditions.

Weather remains a factor, with gusty northwest winds expected to continue tonight and become stronger during tomorrow’s burning period. There is also a risk of thunderstorms this evening, which could bring shifting winds and scattered rain. These conditions may affect fire behaviour, and crews are staying vigilant.

The MD will issue the next update on Monday, June 2, at approximately 9:00am.


Update as of Sunday, June 1 at 10:00am

The 4-hour evacuation alert remains in effect for residents, as weather conditions are expected to change this evening.

The Lesser Slave Regional Fire Service has Structural Protection Crews working on the north side of Marten Beach.

To keep residents and visitors informed, the evacuation alert may change at the direction of the Regional Fire Service. The MD will provide another update later today, Sunday, June 1, at approximately 5:30pm.

Crews will continue to monitor the situation throughout the night. There is no evacuation order at this time. The MD will provide the next update at approximately 10:00am on Sunday, June 1.

There has been little change to the current situation. Alberta Forestry has multiple pieces of equipment on the fire.

At this time, the fire is approximately twenty-four kilometres away from Marten Beach. The 4-hour evacuation alert remains in effect. Lesser Slave Fire Services is deploying crews to the Hamlet to provide support. There is no evacuation at this time.

Be prepared to evacuate within 4-hours of notification in case an evacuation of the community is required. Wildfire SWF088 burning north of the community is still out of control.

This alert is in effect for everyone in the MD of Lesser Slave River located in the Hamlet of Marten Beach.

Action to take

  • If you are located in Marten Beach, you must prepare for a possible evacuation
  • Gather important documents, pets, medication, and enough food and water to be away from home for at least three days
  • NO EVACUATION IS REQUIRED AT THIS TIME

Update as of Friday, May 30 at 6:00pm

There is currently an out of control wildfire (SWF088) burning north of the Hamlet of Marten Beach.

Current weather forecasts show the wind changing direction earlier this evening, which could turn the fire in the community's direction. The MD is requesting that everyone in the community of Marten Beach prepare to evacuate with 4 hours' notice in the event that an evacuation is required.

  • There is no evacuation order at this time
  • Everyone must stay prepared to evacuate on short notice
  • Pack important documents, medication and enough clothes to last for three days
  • Follow instructions from community Emergency Management staff and listen/watch for community social media and Voyent Alert! posts for updated information
