The MD is seeing higher-than-usual numbers of forest tent caterpillars this season. These native insects are a normal part of the local ecosystem, though some years they are more noticeable to residents.

You may see them on trees, in yards, and along roads over the short term. This stage does not last long. Over the next couple of weeks, the caterpillars are expected to cocoon and transition into moths, and the number you see day-to-day should begin to decline.

The MD will continue to monitor the situation and appreciates residents’ understanding as this seasonal cycle runs its course.
