Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere—and being prepared is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and your community. As part of Emergency Preparedness Week (EP Week), May 4 to 10, 2025, Albertans are encouraged to take simple, proactive steps to ensure they’re ready for the unexpected.

This year’s national theme, “Be Ready: Know What to Do”, highlights the importance of understanding the risks in your area and making a plan that can keep you safe in a range of situations—from wildfires and floods to power outages and severe storms.

Why It Matters

Alberta is home to diverse landscapes and weather patterns, which means our communities can face a variety of natural and human-made emergencies. Over the past few years, events like the wildfires and localized flooding have shown how quickly situations can change—and how vital preparedness can be.

How to Get Ready

Here are three key steps every Albertan can take this week:

1. Know the risks

Identify the types of emergencies most likely to affect your area. Visit alberta.ca/emergency-preparedness.aspx to learn more about regional hazards.

2. Make a plan

Talk with your family about what to do in different emergencies. Establish meeting places, emergency contacts, and evacuation routes. Think about any special needs, such as medications or pet care.

3. Build an emergency kit

Your kit should include essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, and copies of important documents. Ideally, it should support your household for at least 72 hours.

Emergency Preparedness Week is more than just a reminder—it’s a call to action. The time to prepare is before a crisis hits. By taking a few simple steps now, you can make a big difference when it matters most.
