Our journey to the new and improved version of started in early 2023.

We began by gathering input from staff, Council and other stakeholders on what they would like to see on the new website.

We also asked people to critique the legacy site.

Common complaints from Council, administration and the community at large included:

  • Information was hard to find, even when using search
  • The website emphasized departments over MD services
  • Pages took a while to load in bandwith-lean communities

We used every bit of feedback we received to build things better from the ground up, with a focus on making the website simpler to use and more focused on customer service.

The new website is also considerably faster than its predecessor, meaning a better experience for residents who may not yet have the best connectivity.

Website Redesign FAQ

Why a new website?

The previous version of was launched way back in 2016 — which is an eternity in the rapidly-evolving digital age. It was becoming increasingly difficult to meet the standards of usability, design and service delivery that are expected by staff, citizens and other stakeholders.

Clearly, the time had come to modernize the site's technology, improve the user experience, and add useful features like online payments and permit applications. In doing so, we're positioning the MD for optimal service delivery and sustained success.

I'm not a techie. How will this new website impact me?

From the drawing board right up launch day, accessibility was our primary focus. A great deal of effort has gone into creating a website that's easy for everyone to use — regardless of age or technical proficiency.

From larger, more legible typestyles and intuitive navigational structure to robust search capabilities, the new and improved is purpose-built for service delivery.

My internet access isn't the best. Will I be able to use the new website?

New doesn't always have to mean heavy, slow or complicated. In fact, the new version of our website is just the opposite.

Any extraneous code or unnecessary features have been eliminated. Everything has been optimized to the degree possible. For example: we've reduced the file size of all images by 85% site-wide with no quality loss. The end result is a fast, user-friendly platform that's purpose-built for delivering information, services and resources to the citizens of Lesser slave River.

We're excited about how well the new website performs — and we hope you will be too!

How many times has the MD redesigned its website?

You're looking at the fifth generation of The very first instance of our municipal website was launched in 2003, followed by upgrades in 2011, 2012, 2016, and the present version in 2024.

Why invest in another version of the MD website?

By building a people-first website that's focused on service delivery, we actually gain efficiencies and reduce operational costs. Studies show that in-person transactions costs companies about $6.50, and phone transactions cost $4.00. By comparison, the same transaction that's facilitated online costs ten cents.

This doesn't mean the MD will ever abandon the human touch. It just means we're investing in more efficient ways to deliver services and resources to our residents.

What's next?

In the near future, we'll be adding some useful online services to the new website, including:

  • A central platform to manage permit applications and fees: Our soon-to-launch online permit portal is designed to get you through the different steps with greater ease than ever before.
  • Online payments: The MD will soon offer the convenient option of making secure online payments (with applicable third-party fees) for certain municipal fees and services. Stay tuned for updates.
