Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking feedback from the public on a draft directive for public consultation. Interested parties are invited to review the Draft Directive and share their comments by August 25 via an online Feedback Form.
About the Draft Directive
Titled Draft Directive XXX: Public Involvement, AER's document sets out industry requirements for engaging and informing members of the public on energy resource developments throughout the life cycle of a project. Click Here to view the document.
AER developed the draft directive after extensive discussions with industry, Albertans, and indigenous communities across the province. In fall 2017, the AER hosted sessions with industry, Albertans, and indigenous communities to collect feedback on how they wanted to engage with one another about proposed energy development. Following these sessions, AER established a Participant Involvement Advisory Panel in February 2018 to help AER draft enhanced public involvement requirements using the feedback we received.
The draft sets out more comprehensive industry requirements for engaging and informing members of the public, stakeholders, and indigenous communities throughout the lifecycle of an energy resource development. AER also published a Draft Manual that provides guidance, context, and examples to help understand the draft directive. Stakeholders and indigenous communities should refer to both documents for a clearer understanding of our requirements and expectations.
When finalized, the directive will replace the existing participant involvement requirements in section 3 of Directive 056: Energy Development Applications and Schedules and section 4 of draft Directive 023: Oil Sands Project Applications. It will not apply to activities regulated under Part 8 of the Mines and Minerals Act.
Public Feedback Encouraged
