Canyon Creek Community Campground

Working toward the milestone of day use readiness.

The Canyon Creek Community Campground is not open for public use at this time. The MD's goal is to reopen the campground for day use as soon as possible. In consideration of all variables, however, this reopening may not take place until late summer/early fall. Updates will be posted on the MD website and social channels as they become available.

The MD is proud of the Canyon Creek Campground, its heritage, and the value it represents to the community. Accordingly, the MD is committed to putting in the required work to ensuring it remains a safe, inclusive, and sustainable asset.

To ensure equitable access to the Canyon Creek Community Campground, the seasonal pass program as it was structured has been discontinued. More details are forthcoming.

A Closer Look at the Canyon Creek Community Campground

The MD has assumed operation of the Canyon Creek Community Campground as of June 2021, but obstacles to opening remain.

The MD cannot open the Canyon Creek Campground for public use in its present state. Doing so would overlook safety code infractions, hinder maintenance efforts, and expose the MD to considerable liability — for which the MD taxpayer is ultimately responsible.

Addressing the campground’s deficiencies is a priority for the MD. There will be some early wins, and others will be achieved over time.

At a bare minimum, certain campground facilities must be brought up to code. Following this step, the campground must undergo and pass all necessary safety and building code inspections. Only then can the campground and its facilities be insured for public access, thus providing campers with peace of mind and protecting MD taxpayers from the threat of unwarranted litigation.

In addition to bringing the campground up to essential code requirements, the MD is working on other enhancements including wayfinding signage, numbering of sites and general grounds upkeep. Longer-term goals include powering and metering individual sites, enhancing toilet facilities and other improvements to the grounds.

MD staff are making a concerted effort to address critical deficiencies and undergo all necessary inspections. The goal is to reopen the campground to the public for day use as soon as possible. In consideration of all variables, this reopening may not take place until late summer/early fall. Updates will be posted at and sent to the Canyon Creek Campground mailing list.

The MD sincerely thanks all patrons for their understanding during the delayed start of the 2021 camping season.

Common Sense Camping

Public health

Due to the risk of COVID-19, Alberta Parks has put a number of measures in place since last year to reduce spread. We expect these measures will support a smooth and safe opening to the 2021 camping season.

Answers to Common Questions About the Reopening of the Canyon Creek Community Campground

Why is this campground not open to the public yet?
For many seasons, the Canyon Creek Campground was managed by a team of volunteers, and its general upkeep was overseen by a private contractor. The MD’s intent was to maintain this legacy operational structure for the 2021 season — but with a clear consensus on roles, responsibilities, procedures, and service levels. Sadly, this consensus was not achieved.

The legacy operators were not amenable to the idea of a more structured framework; and the MD simply could not endorse continued operations without the required structure.
