What is a FireSmart Home Assessment?
A FireSmart Home Assessment is a voluntary, on-site property review conducted by trained professionals. The goal is to identify specific wildfire risks on your property and provide practical, easy-to-follow recommendations to reduce the likelihood of home ignition.
Please Note
These assessments are for information and mitigation planning purposes. Taking action on the recommendations is the best way to protect your home and your community from wildfire threats.
How It Works
During the visit, an assessor will walk through your property with you, focusing on the Home Ignition Zone—the area immediately surrounding your home and outbuildings. They will evaluate:
- Roofing and Siding: Materials and debris accumulation.
- Vents and Openings: Potential entry points for embers.
- Vegetation: Trees, shrubs, and grass proximity to structures.
- Combustible Materials: Placement of firewood, propane tanks, and patio furniture.
Benefits of an Assessment
- Expert Advice: Receive personalized recommendations tailored to your specific property.
- Prioritized Planning: Get a clear summary of actions to help you prioritize your mitigation work.
- Confidentiality: Results are shared only with the property owner or resident for their personal planning.
- Zero Cost: This service is provided free of charge to residents of the MD of Lesser Slave River and the Town of Slave Lake.
