Utility Operator Level I

Reporting to the Utility Lead Operators, the Utility Operator is responsible for the skilled technical activities involved in the operation and maintenance of the Municipal District’s water, water distribution, wastewater collection and treatment systems. 

Specific Accountabilities

Water/Wastewater Services

• Responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of water treatment, water distribution and wastewater collection and treatment systems.

• Perform and record daily laboratory tests, routine water analysis, monitor analytical reports and adjust treatment processes as required.

• Ensure operations are carried out according to Alberta Environment Approvals, Code of Practice, Alberta Health and Standard Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality. Accurate records are to be maintained as per the conditions listed within the specific Approval or Code of Practice. 

• Understand various software systems, SCADA and PLC’s.

• Assist with supervision and training of entry level and seasonal operators.  

• Locate underground municipal services for requesting parties (i.e. Alberta 1st Call, ratepayers).

• Assist with internal and contracted repairs and installations.

• Ensure that water/wastewater facilities are in a clean and neat order.

• Check and calibrate all testing equipment and inform supervisor of any problems.

• Inspect and report any faults in back-up units, emergency engines and generators at all facilities.

• Record water meter readings on the last day of each month for submission for water billing.

• Test fire hydrants to ensure proper working order; drain and winterize in the fall. 

• Maintain water points, collect coins as required.

• Ensure lift stations, lagoons, water and sewer valves and water and sewer lines are operating properly, and the preventative maintenance program is carried out. 

• Check berms periodically for leakage, erosion, and small animal damage. 

• Replenish chemicals and materials required for the operation of the water and sewer systems.

• Ensure all safety policies and procedures are being adhered to.  Check safety devices in all facilities and keep necessary records.  Report all incidents and unsafe conditions. 

• Perform other duties as required.

Education & Certifications

• High school diploma – Required 

• At minimum, must have successfully completed AB Environment Entry Level Training and be registered in the appropriate courses to proceed toward Level 1 Certification. Level 1 must be completed within 2 years of hire – Required  

• Ideally, the operator will hold the following certifications prior to hire: 

• Level I Water Treatment  

• Level I Wastewater Treatment  

• Level I Water Distribution  

• Level I Wastewater Collection with the preference given to Level II. 

• Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License – Required 

• Standard First Aid and CPR - Asset 

Abilities & Experience

• Mechanically inclined – Required  

• Experience with plumbing, electrical, underground utility work – Asset  

• Must be physically fit and able to do heavy work – Required  

• Must be willing to work in all types of weather conditions – Required  

• Superior social, communication, and relationship management skills – Required  

• Ability to work well under pressure, individually and as part of a team – Required  

Salary Range: $32.37 -43.07 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
