The program offers funding that is calculated to cover most of the applicant’s implementation cost and may also pay an opportunity cost. Additionally, applications will be evaluated based on project size, carbon sequestration improvement, number of livestock impacted, and water quality and biodiversity enhancement, which may result in an impact adjustment payment (impact adjustment payments will vary based on the minister's discretion).

The program funding maximums are:

• $150,000 – active primary producers
• $300,000 – Grazing Reserve Associations/operators of a Community Pasture, or an approved Indigenous applicant

The minimum payment under the program is $2,000.

To be eligible for this program, applicants must meet the following criteria for Applicant Type and Environmental Farm Plan:

Eligible applicants

• Primary producer: an individual, a corporation registered in Alberta, a post-secondary institution, or an applied research/forage association that is:
  • responsible for the day-to-day management of an agricultural operation (such as an annual crop, bee, or livestock operation) in Alberta that produces at least $25,000 worth of farm commodities annually
  • responsible for input costs for that operation
  • not a landlord whose only interest in the operation is ownership
• Grazing Reserve Association
• Operator of a Community Pasture
• Approved Indigenous applicants

Environmental Farm Plan (EFP)

An applicant must have a current EFP Certificate or letter of completion or must be currently working on an EFP and is able to receive an EFP certificate or letter of before the end of the project term. The EFP must be completed within 10 years from the date your proposal is received or it will not be considered valid. To get started on your EFP visit: Alberta Environmental Farm Plan.

We understand that Indigenous businesses may have distinct characteristics reflective of regulatory, operational, cultural, and other factors affecting their business history and operation. We aim for flexibility in our programs.
