The MD of Lesser Slave River recognizes the importance of education and continued learning. In this spirit, a number of scholarship and bursary programs are offered each year to encourage students to pursue further educational opportunities, and to enhance the ability of young people to make meaningful contributions to their communities. Additionally, provincial and national scholarship and bursary opportunities that may be of interest to to Lesser Slave River students will be added to this section.
Please note that, unless otherwise specified, the scholarships and bursaries listed within this section are only available to individuals residing within the Municipal District of Lesser Slave River.
2016 Rugged & Real Scholarship Recipients
There were three recipients of the 2016 Rugged & Real Scholarship. Recipient The first Rugged & Real Scholarship. Recipient Kate Kent is currently enrolled in the Ecosystem Management Bachelor of Applied Science Program at Lethbridge College. Brittany Adelman is enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program at Edmonton's MacEwan University. Joelle Doucet is taking a Master of Science Applied in Speech-Language Pathology at McGill University in Montreal. We wish these three young ladies the greatest success in their post-secondary endeavours!
Scholarship and Bursary Opportunities in the Lesser Slave River Region
At least one Scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00 is awarded each year. Apply by July 14, 2017. With a view to supporting local students to advance studies and pursue higher education opportunities, the Rugged & Real Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student attending a post-secondary institution whose permanent residence is within the Municipal District. Mature students are encouraged to apply.

|Alberta Health Services (AHS) & the Northern Alberta Development Council (NADC) are proud to offer this unique bursary opportunity. AHS and the NADC match between $1,000 and $3,000 per student up to a total of $6,000 per year for each recipient in exchange for a return of service within northern Alberta.

|Municipal District of Lesser Slave River has recently announced a new grant program called the Community Assistance Board (CAB) grant. It is available to not-for-profit community organizations in an effort to enhance social programming, community events and facilities, as well as other amenities located within the municipality. The program will have four intakes during the year (January, April, July and September) and applications will be evaluated on the project’s alignment to the MD’s community values.

|The NADC Bursary is a return service bursary of $6,000 per year for a maximum of two years, and is offered to students in their final two years of post-secondary studies. It is meant to encourage students to train for jobs that are in demand in northern Alberta. To learn more, visit them online at www.benorth.ca.

|In recognition of the importance of an educated population to the future well-being of rural communities, the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties established the AAMDC Scholarship Program in 1995. The AAMDC Scholarship Program is designed to encourage young rural Albertans to pursue further education, and thereby enhance the ability of these young people to make meaningful contributions to their communities in subsequent years. Through the Scholarship Program, the AAMDC provides funding assistance to five rural students each year (one student in each of the five AAMDC geographic districts).
